6. Rip currents
During the weekend of April 8, the National Weather Service issued warnings for rip currents on the Gulf of Mexico. The warnings came two days after two tourists were killed by rip currents.
On Saturday, around 6:15 p.m., a group of swimmers was caught in a rip current off Henderson Beach State Park in Destin. Law enforcement was called and the group waited for a rescue boat. After they left the current, the rip current stopped.
A 21-year-old man later identified as Layne Gravois of Gray, La. was pulled into the rip current with two friends. The group tried to swim back to shore but were swept away. The two friends tried to rescue the young boy.
Two Nicholls State University students, Jordan Servat and Reed Boudreaux, were hospitalized after saving the young boy. They were also injured.
