Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park has been an important part of the culture in Grand Rapids for years. Its 158-acre botanical garden features more than 500 different types of plants. This unique, family-friendly attraction offers a variety of exhibits, as well as concerts, guided winter walks, and other fun activities. In fact, in 2019, it served over 670,000 visitors.

The Christmas & Holiday Traditions exhibit is a favorite among many families. Held in December, the exhibit includes live reindeer encounters, visits with Santa, a holiday lights show, and more. Tickets are often sold below face value, so be sure to check online for discounted rates.

While you’re there, you might also want to check out the Railway Garden, which is made up of miniature trains and buildings. You can ride them through three indoor garden spaces.

Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is an outdoor sculpture park in Grand Rapids Township, Michigan. This 158-acre campus features a tropical conservatory, a 1900-seat outdoor amphitheater, a Victorian garden, and large interactive children’s gardens.

The Sculpture Park is one of the nation’s most significant collections of art. Its concentration of works is international in scope. From the late 19th century to the present, it focuses on important masters of sculptural arts. Among the works in the Sculpture Park collection are more than 50 major works by masters of the medium.

Throughout the year, a range of contemporary sculptors will be featured in the permanent collection. During this time, new work by these artists will be presented. Some of the artists in this collection include Claes Oldenburg, Mark di Suvero, Louise Bourgeois, and Coosje van Bruggen.

During the winter, Meijer Gardens transforms into a magical winter wonderland. Nearly 400,000 lights will illuminate the grounds. Indoor galleries feature sculptures by Ai Weiwei, Pablo Picasso, and David Nash.

Temporary exhibitions

Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park Michigan is a world-class destination for art and nature. It is located just minutes from downtown Grand Rapids, MI. In addition to its vast collections of contemporary and traditional art, it features a sculptural park, gardens and a Japanese garden. There are numerous exhibitions at the museum, including several permanent ones.

The Sculpture Park at the Garden contains more than 50 works of art. These include sculptures by Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore, and Mark di Suvero. This garden also includes five indoor theme gardens, including the Richard & Helen DeVos Japanese Garden.

The Garden has a permanent collection of over 200 works of art. Among the notable artists included in the collection are Henry Moore, Pablo Picasso, Edgar Degas, Barbara Hepworth, and Coosjie van Bruggen.

Aside from the permanent collection, there are three temporary exhibitions at the Garden each year. These are Butterflies Are Blooming in the spring, and two large seasonal exhibition events.

Butterflies are Blooming is the largest temporary butterfly exhibit in the nation. Visitors can view more than 7,000 butterflies from around the world.

Indoor activities for kids

If you are looking for fun indoor activities for kids, check out Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. With more than 150 acres of botanical experiences and a variety of outdoor activities, there is something for everyone.

In addition to the outdoor gardens, there are five indoor theme gardens. The Lena Meijer Children’s Garden is a five-acre, interactive garden designed for young children. There are towering trees, a Great Lakes water feature, and a rock quarry. It is also home to an heirloom vegetable patch.

Another indoor activity is the Curiosity Courtyard, which is inspired by Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden. This area features ten engaging activity stations. Each station offers a different learning experience.

Another popular indoor activity for children is the Great Lakes Water Feature, which offers a variety of hands-on activities. For example, there is a miniature boat that can be launched from a bridge. A series of information panels and a water table help teach kids about the Great Lakes.
