Sunnyside Park #2

There is a park in Sunnyside that is almost exactly 100 years old, and it was once called Sunnyside Stadium. The stadium opened in 1925 next to the Boulevard Club and Parkdale Canoe Club, and was popular for hosting women’s softball leagues. However, in 1956, the stadium was demolished to make way for a parking lot for the Boulevard Club. Fortunately, the neighborhood still has an interesting history, thanks to the park that was built in its place.

Until 1938, this area of Sunnyside Park was largely undeveloped, with large tracts of land remaining. The community was not yet a bustling neighborhood, so it was often a private place. The resulting park, which is now known as Sunnyside Gardens Park, has plenty of space for public gatherings and recreation. Its facilities include playgrounds, baseball diamonds, tennis courts, and a ping pong table.

Before the park was built, there was an open space on the site near Mangels Street. This open space was perfect for baseball, but the neighborhood’s residents weren’t too keen on it. A group of young Sunnysiders decided to change that by building a make-shift baseball diamond. They “borrowed” the wood from a construction worker and constructed the backstop themselves. But they were caught. A few years later, they were arrested for the illegal activity, but their bold initiative was eventually rewarded.

The park also has ADA accessible play equipment, two picnic pavilions, and barbecue grills. Sunnyside Park is a popular spot for families with young children and is a great place for a picnic. The park is eight acres in size, with lawns and mature deciduous trees. It also has a playground and a wading pool for kids. Sunnyside Beach is another area that is perfect for families. Sunnyside Park is an excellent place to spend an afternoon with friends.
