The Dome’s construction required 1.6 million board feet of lumber and enough concrete to build seventy miles of sidewalks. The dome’s unique construction method is called the Varax system, and it utilizes triangular timber units, or glulams, to build the structure. These glulams, or’sharp’, units are 5,000 pounds each. The glulams are connected by steel hubs and held together by a concrete tension ring.
