A 23-time Grand Slam champion, Ajla Tomljanovic, managed to hold off five match points for the duration of the three-hour-plus proceedings but couldn't do more.

Williams' US Open opening round match against Danka Kolinic was expected to be a farewell for the 23-time grand champion tennis player.


Williams' final victory at 40 years of age was at the hands of Ajla Thomasljanovic, a player nearly 12 years her younger.

Williams leaves the game in second place all-time in majors after Margaret Court's 24, Williams is the GOAT status in tennis's eyes. She was awarded it during the extraordinary 23-year history.
