They find five different antigens on the surface of red blood cells

The 'Er' grouping could aid doctors in identifying and treating rare cases of blood incompatibility, such as between pregnant mothers and foetuses.

New blood group, known as the Er blood group

A new blood group has been described by a group of scientists. Aside from the most well-known blood type groups, such as A, B, O, and Rh, there are dozens more.

According to a research published in the journal Blood, there are five Er antigens in this group based on genetic polymorphisms in the Piezo1 protein. The Piezo1 protein is present on the surfaces of red blood cells.

Antibodies that bind to the Er antigens can cause immune cells to assault the mismatched cells. This can also happen in other circumstances when blood types are incompatible, which is why doctors and other health care providers work hard to avoid mismatches.

The Er antigen was found many years ago, but this is the first research to characterise the antigen's many mutations. This contains two previously undiscovered variants of the antigen.

"It's like discovering a new planet when you uncover a new blood group system." It broadens the scope of our experience," remarked Daniela Hermelin of Saint Louis University School of Medicine to WIRED.

Differences in Er group compatibility may be uncommon, but they should be noted by physicians and nurses if they are having difficulty identifying their patients.
