US Open 2022 - Defending champion Emma Raducanu loses to the first round 

Emma Raducanu's US Open defence was over in the first round. 

Raducanu was an unexpected success in the sport world last year. She went from being a qualifier to becoming the woman's singles champion in New York in just two weeks. 


Cornet was her 63rd consecutive Grand Slam. Cornet defeated Raducanu 6-3, 6-3 in 1 hour, 42 minutes.


Cornet and Raducanu exchanged break at the start of second set. But the real magic came in the seventh game when Cornet broke Raducanu’s serves to move up 4-3.


Raducanu will lose her WTA ranking, as she has lost the 2030 points she won in this event last year. This is her first year as a WTA Tour member. In the second round, she lost at Roland Garros,

Raducanu, who was the daughter of a Romanian and Chinese father and mother in Toronto, earned $2.5m for the title. For losing the first round of the tournament, Raducanu earned $80,000.


Raducanu made it to the U.S. Open in Cincinnati having reached the round 16, where she was defeated by Victoria Azarenka


She beat the world number 1. 1 Iga Swigek in the third round of Wimbledon, No. 13 Jelena Ospatenko in the second round, French Open.
